A tale of triumph could be about a dental cleaning!

I have a severe fear of the dentist. Honestly. I haven’t had a single positive visit in a long time.

It all began when I was little. I had a traumatic childhood experience which involved me swallowing a whole candy without chewing. Caught off guard, I started gasping for air and massaging my throat to ease the pain, but it didn’t subside until much, much later. Since then, I’ve had problems allowing anyone near my mouth. When I visited the doctor’s office and she waved a tongue depressor in my face, I turned sheet white.

When it was time to get a check-up with my dentist, I tried every possible way to snake out of it.

My last dentist appointment was in January of last year. It had gone so terribly that the dental hygienist actually gave up midway. I went home in tears. I haven’t visited a dental office since.

Until now

My good friend Janet is a dental assistant. A couple of weeks ago, she referred me to her practice. With much hesitation, I made an appointment. With a few days left until my appointment, I was already worrying and thinking of all of the horrible possible outcomes.

When I got to the practice, I actually felt all right. The atmosphere was soothing, and the staff was extremely friendly and accommodating, taking my concerns into serious consideration and making sure I was comfortable no matter what. In the end, I had a pretty positive experience and I left the practice feeling proud of myself – something I never expected to happen in my entire dentist-fearing lifetime.

And that’s how I faced my fear of the dentist. What started out as a teeth-clencher ended up being something to smile about.
