In a recent blog called “Shit Happens” we talked about things that are inevitable in life. Yes, shit does happen, as Forrest Gump so beautifully expressed. So what should you do when things turn to shit?
Flush the dunny. In other words get rid of the rubbish, and don’t let it linger about.
Steve Hansen, the present (2015) All Black coach, but at the time the All Black Assistant Coach, delivered that rugby year’s best line after a horrible performance against Italy. He suggested it was time to “flush the dunny and move on”.
Let’s break that phrase down:
Flush = cleanse (something, especially a toilet) by causing large quantities of water to pass through it
Dunny = Australian slang for toilet
So “flush the dunny” means to cleanse the toilet with large quantities of water. What are we cleansing and removing from the toilet? Unwanted materials and the associated paper work.
If you don’t, “Stinking Thinking” might linger. Flush it !!
We are ready for a fresh start – just as Hansen’s All Black rugby team was ready for a fresh start after their horrible performance against Italy.
Don’t let the bad and unwanted material linger. It does no good. So when “shit happens” for whatever reason, “flush the dunny”.
Steve Hansen is now the All Blacks coach. He took his own advice. He flushed, and moved on. In fact, many people say that Steve Hansen is very successful
So if success is the attainment of a worthwhile goal. This success is not instant. On the way, there are a few obstacles. As Forest Gump said so brilliantly, “shit happens”. What “shit happens” we must “flush the dunny”.
The definition of success I like best was coined by that excellent motivational speaker, Earl Nightingale.
