I have just been enjoying that magnificent Tales of Triumph E-Book about Self Belief, featuring Muhammad Ali as the inspirational and very uplifting protagonist.
I am also struggling along with my business. Things are slow, and very little seems to be happening in a positive way. I also played cricket last Saturday, and was bowled out for a duck.
So I am fighting. I am struggling — and yes, I am having doubts.
What do I do? Muhammad Ali never seemed to have any doubts that he was the greatest. That’s something to think about — He WAS the greatest, but these days (2016) he isn’t. Today he would not do very well in the boxing ring — but he was after all born in 1942. Gee that makes him 73!!!
The other week, I had a spar with my Trainer in the gym. I was heavily out pointed. Time to think about a new strategy!
Not even a new strategy. As I have my “Bout with Doubt” I must realise that, like Muhammad Ali, I am not as young and mobile as I used to be. It’s a case of playing to my strengths.
I find that there are perhaps three categories of doubt:
1) Intellectual doubts – for example, Can I prove that Jesus Christ really did rise from the dead?
2) Spiritual doubts – for example, Why do I sometimes find it hard to get to Church?
3) Circumstantial doubts – or example, Why is it taking me so long to recover from that heart problem? or Why does no one seem to want to purchase my new E-Book?
What it comes down to is that my doubt is in my mind. It’s no different to Muhammad Ali programming himself with that terrific affirmation “I am the greatest”.
What about me? I am saying to myself “I’m not sure” and if I’m not careful, beating myself up about it.
Life is hard enough as it is. With all of my Intellectual doubts, Spiritual doubts and Circumstantial doubts, it is a tough challenge. I can make this challenge easier.
The key is KICAS — a beautiful acronymn which stands for Keep it Clear and Simple. Whenever I strike a problem, it is no different to a boxing bout. Work it out. Beat the problem systematically — just as I would overcome an opponent in a boxing bout.
Unlike Muhammad Ali, I am not the greatest. However, I have a good enough brain to find an effective solution. Keep it Clear and Simple.
I might not win as decisively as Muhammad Ali.
However, with positive planning that embraces KICAS, I can win my bout with doubt.
